Secluded Home: A Hidden Oasis in the City

A Residential House Renovation by D.R. Tai, Y.H Tsao, and Jeff Chiu

Hidden in the city, hidden in the heart, and deep in the residence, the Secluded Home is a composite office space renovated from a 30-year-old house. With its unique blend of old and new, this residential house offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city.

Designed with the intention of creating a space where family and friends can gather, the Secluded Home is a place of warmth and comfort. The first floor features a bedroom for the homeowner's father, complete with his own belongings and a wooden table for writing and tea-making. The kitchen is equipped with an oven and cooking area, perfect for hosting friends and loved ones. Upstairs, the main part of the design project, offers a serene and inviting atmosphere.

What sets the Secluded Home apart is its focus on simplicity and practicality. The white base of the building and the minimalist interior design create a calming environment, allowing visitors to unwind and find peace in the midst of the urban chaos. The use of white as the dominant color reflects the designers' intention to soothe anxious emotions and provide a sense of tranquility.

Materials from the old house, such as granolithic flooring, stained glass, sliding doors, and window barriers, have been preserved to retain the charm of the past. Additionally, elements from the surrounding region, including logs, minerals, and natural landscapes, have been incorporated to enhance the overall aesthetic of the space.

With a total area of 340sqm, the Secluded Home offers ample space for both work and leisure. The design team, consisting of D.R. Tai, Y.H Tsao, and Jeff Chiu, carefully considered every detail to create a space that reflects the homeowner's personality and taste.

The Secluded Home is not just a physical space; it is an experience. When the glass door in front of the first floor is open, the house connects with the small courtyard, allowing the natural elements to flow seamlessly into the interior. Whether it's feeling the cool breeze in the summer or basking in the warmth of the sun in the winter, the Secluded Home offers a simple and light lifestyle.

The project, which started in December 2016 in Taiwan, was completed in May 2017. Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges, such as reimagining the rooftop structure while preserving the original form. However, by embracing the concept of simplicity, they were able to unleash the hidden power within the design.

The Secluded Home has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

With its unique blend of old and new, the Secluded Home offers a sanctuary in the heart of the city. It is a testament to the power of simplicity and the ability of design to create spaces that bring joy and tranquility to our lives.
